Welcome to the Fairy Box

Fairy Box Support Programmes

The Fairy Box – is a themed gift box which sits on the children’s ward
so that it is available at any time of the night or day to provide an ill
child with a small gift when they need cheered up because the treatment
they need to get better has left them frightened, exhausted or upset. This gift
is theirs to keep. Parents or carers can choose a gift for their child or nursing or
medical staff can help the child choose a gift. Currently there are Ten Fairy Boxes
in hospitals in Scotland – three in Ninewells hospital, Dundee, two in the Royal
Children’s Hospital Aberdeen, two in Yorkhill children’s hospital Glasgow, two in
Edinburgh Royal Hospital for Sick Children (sponsored by Bett Homes), and one in Perth
Royal Infirmary (sponsored by the Hilton Foundation In The Community).

We are working towards establishing Fairy Boxes and local contacts in the following locations: Kilmarnock (Crosshouse Hospital); Melrose (Borders General Hospital); Dumfries (Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary); Elgin (Dr Gray's Hospital); Inverness (Raigmore Hospital); Wishaw (Wishaw General Hospital); Edinburgh (Edinburgh Royal Hospital for Sick Kids); Livingston (St John's Hospital); Kirkwall, Orkney (Balfour Hospital); Lerwick (Gilbert Bain Hospital); and Stornoway (Western Isles Hospital).

If you would like to support an existing, or help establish, a Fairy Box, please do get in touch. Email: fairies@fairybox.org

Fairy Box Kiss – is a special thank you from an ill child to someone – such as a special brother or sister, mum or dad, grandparent, family friend, nurse or doctor - who has been especially supportive of them when they are ill or recovering from their illness. The Fairy Box Kiss is currently a handmade "thank you" card from Fairy Box supporters. As we develop our programme of corporate sponsors, we hope to include a special gift or treat for this very special nominee.

We are also developing two new programmes to help relieve the long-term stress that serious childhood illness can bring to other members of the family and the medical and nursing teams caring for them.

Fairy Box Tales – is a programme of trained and vetted story tellers who offer one-on-one story telling for ill children in hospital; taking them on flights of imagination to lift their spirits and giving parents a much-needed short break whilst allowing busy nursing staff on the ward to continue with their duties.

Fairy Box Haven is an holistic well-being support programme which encourages parents, nursing and medical staff, to discover a safe and secure healing space where they can explore alternative and complimentary therapies that have the potential to relieve the emotional and physical stress of supporting a seriously ill child. Some therapies will be suitable for children and may be offered to them.

How can Fairy Box help my child If you have an ill child in a hospital where a Fairy Box currently exists, please ask the ward staff about the Fairy Box. If you have an older child or young teenagers with a special request, please let us know and we will do our best to help.
